Parent Training & Family Support · Southeast Florida
Parent involvement is one of the strongest predictors of ABA therapy outcomes. Our BCBA-led parent training program teaches families across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe Counties the exact techniques their child’s therapist uses — so progress happens all day, not just during sessions.

What Is Parent Training ABA Therapy?
Parent training in ABA therapy is a structured program in which a BCBA teaches parents and caregivers the behavioral techniques used in their child’s therapy sessions. The goal is to give families the knowledge and skills to apply ABA strategies consistently throughout the day — during mealtimes, bath time, homework, transitions, and every other daily routine. This window of time is when the brain is most flexible and most responsive to learning. Research consistently shows that children who begin intensive ABA therapy during these years make the largest and most lasting gains — in communication, social skills, adaptive behavior, and daily living.
A child who receives 20 hours of ABA therapy per week is still spending 148 hours per week outside of sessions. What happens during those hours — how caregivers respond to behavior, how they prompt skills, how they reinforce progress — has a direct and measurable impact on how fast the child progresses. Parent training closes the gap between sessions.
At Sunshine Behavioral Health Services, parent training is included in every ABA therapy program — not as an add-on, but as a core component. Our BCBAs deliver parent training in-person at your home, at the school, or via telehealth. Sessions are practical, hands-on, and focused on skills you can use the same day. Telehealth parent training is also available →
What parent training covers
✓
How to prompt communication without creating dependence
✓
How to respond to challenging behaviors without reinforcing them
✓
How to use positive reinforcement effectively and consistently
✓
How to structure daily routines to support skill building
✓
How to implement your child’s Behavior Intervention Plan
✓
How to teach new skills using the same methods as your child’s therapist
✓
How to collect simple behavior data at home
✓
How to generalize skills from therapy to everyday settings
✓
How to coordinate with teachers and other caregivers
All parent training is guided by your child’s individualized treatment plan and the findings from the initial Functional Behavior Assessment and reviewed regularly by your child’s BCBA.
What You Will Learn
Parent training covers three core competency areas. Here is what our BCBA team teaches in each.
💬
You will learn the foundational principles of behavior — why behaviors occur, what maintains them, and how the environment shapes your child’s actions. Understanding the ABCs of behavior (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence) gives you a lens for responding effectively to any situation, even ones you have never seen before.
🔧
You will learn how to use the specific techniques your child’s therapist uses — prompting, fading, reinforcement, error correction, discrete trial training, natural environment teaching — in a way that is practical for daily family life. Your BCBA demonstrates each technique, then watches you practice it and gives you real-time feedback.
📅
The biggest barrier to skill generalization is inconsistency. When every person in a child’s life responds differently to the same behavior, the child’s progress slows significantly. Parent training brings consistency — you, your partner, grandparents, siblings, teachers, and babysitters all learn the same approach and apply it the same way. Learn more about how ABA works →
How Our Program Works
Our parent training program starts with a conversation. Before the first training session, your child’s BCBA reviews your child’s treatment plan and discusses your family’s biggest day-to-day challenges. This shapes which skills to focus on first. The process continues with a thorough Functional Behavior Assessment by a BCBA. The assessment evaluates your child’s current communication, play, social, and adaptive skills. It also looks at any challenging behaviors to understand what is maintaining them. This assessment is the foundation of everything that follows.
The BCBA identifies the parent training goals most relevant to your family — which techniques you need to learn, which routines to target first, and which behaviors are most affecting daily life at home. Families are different. One family needs help with mealtime meltdowns. Another needs help with morning routines. Another needs help generalizing communication skills. Your training is built around your specific situation.
Parent training sessions are structured but practical. Your BCBA introduces a concept, explains the rationale, demonstrates the technique with your child, then guides you through practicing it yourself while your child is present. You get immediate, constructive feedback. Sessions end with specific home practice goals for the week so you can build fluency between sessions.
Most parent training sessions are conducted in-home, where the learning takes place in the real environment where the skills need to work. Telehealth parent training is also available for families who prefer it, including families in the Florida Keys. Your BCBA observes through video and provides coaching in real time as you work with your child.
Your progress in implementing ABA strategies is tracked alongside your child’s behavioral progress. Your BCBA measures your skill fluency, gives you specific feedback, and adjusts the training sequence based on what is working. Parent training does not stop when you have sat through the sessions — it stops when you can confidently and consistently apply the techniques on your own. Who This Is For
Parent training benefits families in many different situations. Here are the three most common.
Families Currently in ABA Therapy
If your child is already receiving ABA therapy, parent training is the most powerful thing you can add. Learning the same techniques your child’s therapist uses means those techniques get applied consistently across all the hours your child is not in a session. Most families in our program see measurably faster progress after adding parent training. Parent training is already included in every Sunshine program — if you are not using it, contact your BCBA today. Read our toddler ABA guide →
Families on Waitlists or Between Providers
If your child is waiting for a therapy placement or you are between providers, standalone parent training means progress does not have to stop. A BCBA can teach you the foundational strategies right now so you are actively supporting your child’s development every day. Telehealth parent training can begin within days of your first call. Start with telehealth parent training →
Families Who Want to Understand ABA Better
Many families want to understand ABA therapy more deeply — to be informed partners in their child’s treatment rather than passive observers. Parent training builds that understanding. You learn the principles behind every technique, which means you can apply them flexibly in new situations and advocate effectively for your child in IEP meetings and with other providers. What the Research Shows
Many families wait too long before starting ABA therapy — often because they are told to “wait and see” or because they are not sure what they are looking for. These are some of the signs that suggest your child could benefit from an early intervention evaluation.
The research is clear, but the most convincing evidence is what our own families report. Parents who complete our training program consistently tell us that it changed their confidence, their daily routines, and their relationship with their child. What the research consistently shows:
✓
Children with active parent involvement generalize skills significantly faster
✓
Skills taught only in therapy sessions without home reinforcement fade more quickly
✓
Parent-mediated interventions show outcomes comparable to therapist-delivered programs for many goals
✓
Parent training reduces caregiver stress and improves family quality of life, not just child outcomes
✓
Consistency across all settings is the single strongest predictor of skill maintenance
What families consistently tell us after training:
✓
“I finally understand why my child does what he does, and I know exactly how to respond.”
✓
“The morning routine that used to take two hours now takes 30 minutes.”
✓
“My daughter’s meltdowns dropped by more than half within a month of me starting training.”
✓
“I feel like an active partner in my son’s therapy instead of just dropping him off.”
✓
“I use these strategies with my other kids too. They work for everyone.”

Yes. Parent training is included as a core component of every ABA therapy program at Sunshine Behavioral Health Services — not as an optional add-on, but as a required part of your child’s program. It is covered by most Florida insurance plans as part of ABA therapy services. If your child is currently in our program and you have not been participating in parent training sessions, contact your BCBA today to get started.
You do not need to be present for every direct therapy session your child has with their RBT. However, you are expected to participate in regular parent training sessions with the BCBA. These are separate from your child’s direct therapy sessions and are specifically focused on teaching you the techniques, not on directly treating your child. Most families find that even 30 to 60 minutes of parent training per week produces a significant impact on their child’s progress.

Yes. Grandparents, siblings, babysitters, and any other consistent caregiver in your child’s life can participate in parent training. The more people in your child’s life who apply the same strategies consistently, the faster your child will generalize skills. We encourage extended family involvement and can tailor sessions to include whoever plays a significant role in your child’s daily care.
